CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) - Mayor Frank Jackson swore in the city’s new firefighters Friday afternoon.
Nineteen fire cadets are graduating from the 34th Fire Training Academy Class.
The class includes Lauren Phillips, who is the first female fire cadet in thirty years.
Justin Leon is also becoming a new Cleveland fire fighter. He is the son of fallen Cleveland Police Officer Wayne Leon, who was shot and killed while on patrol in June of 2000. Firefighter Leon was issued the same CFD badge number, 1338, that his father wore for CPD.
The new recruits spent over three months at the Fire Training Academy. Their training included live burns, which simulate actual fires, as well as rescues, building construction, apparatus operation and a 130-hour course in emergency medical care.
The new firefighters will take an oath to serve the City of Cleveland and they will be assigned to neighborhoods throughout the city.
The 33rd Fire Academy Training Class graduated in July of 2018.
There were 39 cadets in that class.
